Introducing TeamSpeex!
Wondering what TeamSpeex is? I’m happy to tell you but first I’ll explain what TeamSpeak is:
TeamSpeak is a Voice over IP program used by alot of gamers to communicate with each other with voice.
The TeamSpeak client is available for Windows and Linux users and an official Mac client has been announced more than 1 year ago but there is still no Mac client as of today..
So I was tired of waiting and seeing Mac users being left in the dark and not supported by not having a client, up until now ofcourse because (you probably already guessed it) TeamSpeex is a TeamSpeak client for Mac OS X!
I named it TeamSpeex because it only supports the Speex codec.
It is fully compatible with existing TeamSpeak servers, and with PC and Linux users.
Here is a screenshot showing the User Interface:

Currently the client is being beta tested by several Mac gamers, an open beta will be available soon for everyone to download, so stay tuned!

(wil ook zeker even voor je testen. iMac g4 1ghz 0sx 10.4.2)
thx en bedankt!
October 12th, 2005 at 17:20
OMG!!!! My Dreams have been forfilled! I bow down before you. O.K. maybe that’s going a little too far. But this is awesome news to hear. Can’t wait to try it out
October 12th, 2005 at 17:21
Well well! What a man, er, woman. Whatever!
I’m chuffed! If you get this right and I can have a TS equivalent on my Mac and finally be able to join in with my PC using (fools) WoW buddies I’ll gladly send you a donation!
If you want another Beta tester drop me a line, be glad to help.
October 12th, 2005 at 17:49
This is just the sort of news that my WOW guild has been waiting for… Half of us are Mac users and can’t TS with the Windows users in the guild. If you need more beta testers I can get you 5 of them.
October 12th, 2005 at 17:50
Thanks soo much! This will bring Mac internet gaming up to speed.
!yay!
October 12th, 2005 at 17:57
this is great news. if you need a few other testers i’d love to try this out.
i use TS on my windows machien when i play wow, but id use the mac version on my other machine instead if it works just as well. So i’d love to give it a try.

October 12th, 2005 at 18:05
i love you. no really. i mean it. i’ve been dying for this since WoW came out. i’m simply known as “the mac guy who can’t get on TS” in my guild. i’m sure you dont need it, but i’d also be willing to test this on my machine (iMac G5, 1.8ghz, tiger). send me an email. or get a public test of this going soon!
October 12th, 2005 at 18:15
Great! When can we expect a Beta?!? Even a version that works crappy! Hell, anything is better than waiting a year to try something out!

October 12th, 2005 at 19:02
THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!
I always wanted this! I managed somehow to run TS over an emulated windows but it was a pain in the ass. This is sooooo great! Please if u need a betatester, contact me (meltedbutter@spymac.com), I can’t wait to test/use it. I play in mayhemteam.com and Teamspeak is so important, to get to know the people better and to communicate during gaming.
Keep up the good work!!!!!! My Dream comes true!!!!
wow!
October 12th, 2005 at 19:07
Hey, our clan for AA has been awaiting this, and we are willing to help in any way possible, you can contact me at the email provided. Or by posting on our forums. They may be down at the moment, but will be back soon. Thanks for all that you have done, and we can’t wait to see what you have done.
Thanks,
The MoD Squad.
October 12th, 2005 at 19:12
If you guys get this to open beta, I, for one will be giving you a generous donation for the continued development. Further, I will encourage the mac users on WWII Online, who have been screaming for a mac TS client, to contribute as well.
If you are interested in have a dedicated group of serious beta testers, please contact me.
Good work…and a huge thanks!
October 12th, 2005 at 19:15
Good work!
If you need anyone to do any additional programming, I’m available to help you through the end of the week with any tasks that need doing. You can see my portfolio through my homepage if you want to confirm my coding skills.
October 12th, 2005 at 19:28
Congrats!
You have done what many of us have waited for. I even emailed the TS folks to ask if they needed mac programming skills, but not a word from them. If you need beta testing and debugging help, I have both Dual G5:s and a 1.7GHz G4 (on which my son plays alot) for available for testing. Just mail me, and I run down to the closed computerstore (got a bunch within alomost walking distance) and buy a headset or two.
Cheers,
// Totte - aka Colonel Panic
October 12th, 2005 at 19:31
Well done,
I just hope those fools at TS don’t try to block your program somehow- THis is really good news - Honestly a big heart felt thanks from all the suffering mac users who have waited 2 - 3 years for TS to get their finger out and make something.
October 12th, 2005 at 19:51
Cool, can’t wait to try it out.
October 12th, 2005 at 19:56
Great idea! Well done! Thanks for your work, and please, keep it updated as necessary.
October 12th, 2005 at 20:07
We have over a 1000 players in our 7 official WoW guilds. There are many more in other games. If you need a large scale Beta test group I’m sure our guilds would love to help out. I miss making fun of my Mac friends over voice.

October 12th, 2005 at 20:21
!wow!
Thanks for doing this, I’m sure there will be a ton of happy Mac users in the near future. I play World of Warcraft and the guild I am in uses Ventrilo, not Teamspeak. I wonder if it would be possible to eventually have a Ventrilo version for us as well? I hope I’m not asking too much!
Great looking cocoa interface setup, nice and clean. Once again, thank you. I really hope the TS guys don’t make a fuss about this because I find it extremely idiotic that they couldn’t bring us a Mac client in over a year EVENT THOUGH THEY GOT FREE MACS FROM APPLE. Yes you heard that correctly, TS and Vent teams both got free Macs to develop their apps on, and what has become of it? NOTHING.
You are the man!

October 12th, 2005 at 21:02
Oh my god, awesome. Our guild is Ventrilo, so I’m out of luck here… but this is great news for a lot of people.
Can you talk about the feasibility of an independent Mac Ventrilo client?
October 12th, 2005 at 21:43
Just make the beta client available, and we will donate.
October 12th, 2005 at 22:41
WOOT!
I agree with everyone here. We’ve been dying for this on WoW as well. I second that I’ll get all my Mac guild mates to help in any way possible. Just let me know if you need more beta testers and of course donations are in order.
October 12th, 2005 at 22:50
When when when:) I am so excited g5 user that loves his machine but gets complained to every raid for not having ts! thanks guys, I will donate too as soon as beta hits!
October 12th, 2005 at 22:51
HOLYCRAP!!! I wanna beta test this as soon as i can
October 12th, 2005 at 23:29
Been looking forward to this day for ages.
Would love to join the beta - slightly non-standard application of it - Virtual Air Traffic Control. IVAO currently uses TS as its voice client and I’d love to be able to fly with voice ATC on it!
October 13th, 2005 at 00:12
Been waiting for this sort of effort since late last november. Good work. Looking forward to release, or some sort of open beta.
October 13th, 2005 at 00:37
Knowing our luck this dream wont last
. Lets hope TS are cool with it.
October 13th, 2005 at 01:05
You are a bright shining god!!!!!!!!!
I have access to roughly 600 macs of various flavors and would be more than hapopy to offer up several labs worth of students for testing. Good thing about running your own mac labs is no one says “No” when you let’em lan party…
Game On! Open up that beta,
October 13th, 2005 at 01:37
WOOHOO!! If you people need any help with testing, or for example localization to finnish language, don’t be shy to ask!
This is an excellent initiative and once I get my hands on a beta release, I will make a donation. Cheers guys!!
October 13th, 2005 at 01:50
!wow!
Sounds almost too good to be true. I want to test it immediately.
//Rob
October 13th, 2005 at 03:07
great job!!!!!!many a mac users will be happy
will donate once beta goes public
October 13th, 2005 at 03:42
We could probably get MANY more beta testers of this fromVendetta-Online.
Can’t wait to try it out. We’re limited to skype, really, now…
October 13th, 2005 at 03:46
guys, i got to test it and it works great. here is the feedback i gave him:
i posted out there that i wanted to try it out for him and he sent me a mail and allowed me to test. here is the response i gave him.
i installed, plugged in my usb ps2 head set, changed my push to talk button, logged into the ts server my guild has been using for WOW, and not a single
problem. they were already running the right codec cause i didnt have to ask to have anything changed at all. i talked it up for about 5 minutes with a few
people and logged right back out. i told them it was a mac client and they were happy that mac users will now get to use it. it was just as clear as the windows version.
he responded by saying he had no idea the ps2 would work, but was happy it did.
October 13th, 2005 at 04:32
OMG WOOOOT!

October 13th, 2005 at 04:48
Many thanks for your great work - I know the WW2ONLINE MAC community will be knocking down your door!
Great JOB!
October 13th, 2005 at 04:55
You have truely proven yourself better than the Teamspeak Developers.
Thanks a bunch for doing this, i can’t wait to use this… I’ve gotten tired of everyone telling me to get onto TS and not being able to. This is really awesome.
October 13th, 2005 at 07:28
hey, this is amazing, ive been waiting for so long for this, if you want me to test anything, im running a 1.25 Ghz emac G4, i have UT2004, bf1942+expansions, halo, CoD, Mohaa, and lots of other game to test
just mail me;)
October 13th, 2005 at 07:33
This is great. Like you, I’ve been waiting in vain for a TeamSpeak client for Mac. My whole guild in WoW uses TeamSpeak, and I’m left out as the lone “mac user who can’t listen to us”
I look forward to when I can get my hands on your program =)
If you need more beta testers, I’d be happy to help.
October 13th, 2005 at 08:01
Hi there,
I work as a games reviewer for New Zealand magazine Macguide and I just have to say “WOOO HOO!” well done. Teamspeak have been taking far to long and I commend you for taking the initative to do this.
I can’t wait to check this out and I will make sure to mention this in a future issue of Macguide.
October 13th, 2005 at 08:33
Whoa. I’m freakin’ giddy here! Keep it up, dude! And expect daily visits while the beta vultures circling awaiting the public beta!
October 13th, 2005 at 09:54
muchas gracias, savvy!
October 13th, 2005 at 10:32
Great job and keep up the good work.
Me and my UT2k4 clan will be very happy to hear this. They wont call me names anymore now. All my members use TS and some even use TS+Gizmo at the same time so they can communicate with me.
I am really looking forward to use TeamSpeex.
October 13th, 2005 at 10:42
!hmm!
teamspeak compatible app for the mac? since the glory old days of roger wilco we were waiting for this… for me, this simply sounds to good to be true. we´ll see.
October 13th, 2005 at 10:47

If possible, I’d like to join the beta program, to test this out with my clanmates on AA:O.

October 13th, 2005 at 12:29
Great news, I’m a PC user myself however the squad I am in has some Mac users and they’re forever being left out of our fun chats.
Good work folks!
October 13th, 2005 at 12:41

October 13th, 2005 at 18:07
Well… if you want a great Mac gaming community to test it out in more then one game then look no further then Team G5. We run UT, CoDUO, WoW, and others. Which brings me to my next point… how come most of the people in here are not members of a Mac only gaming clan or atleast playong on our servers?
www.teamg5.com
October 13th, 2005 at 18:15
This is very welcome. I’m eagerly awaiting the open beta and will recommend it to all my Mac guildies in WoW as soon as possible. I see you’re supporting the speex codecs for now, any chance of adding the GSM ones on a later date perhaps?
Cheers,
Dugrin
October 13th, 2005 at 18:42
Thank you man, its so fantastic!!!!!!!!!
October 13th, 2005 at 18:43
As a member of a Mac multi game clan (Hehe [G5]Musik), I must thank you for this job. I’ve been pushing TS team to help us carry that out since the beginning, seems you had to do all the job. Congratulations !!
I’d be delighted to help by testing this wonderful and very awaited app in the Mac gaming community
We play on quite a lot of games, WoW/UT/TO/FO/CoD/RtcW/Q3/W3 and others and that would just be fair to help as we can to release this most wanted app
We are a french clan and could help out to make a french localisation, with great pleasure !
October 13th, 2005 at 19:06
Hey man, if you need more BETA testers, I would be more than willing. I am in a end game raiding guild that is progressing through BWL, so if you need someone to really stress test it, sign me up!
October 13th, 2005 at 19:23
Are there any plans to make this open source?
October 13th, 2005 at 19:37
“Just make the beta client available, and we will donate.”
Yes, yes we will. I have waited many many many years for this! This just made my morning.
October 13th, 2005 at 19:46
That’s WoooOOooooNDeeerFuuuuuul !
October 13th, 2005 at 19:55
HOOAH! This is what I have been waiting for!! I’d be glad to join beta testing group. I am using Teamspeak now via VirtualPC and it is a drag, but it works. Can’t wait to get OS X client for TS
Well done man!
October 13th, 2005 at 20:05

)
October 13th, 2005 at 20:09
Hey man/woman
I’m from TeamG5, one of the largest Mac Gaming communities around. If you need people to beta test, we would be more than glad to help as a team
October 13th, 2005 at 21:00
i don’t think teamspeex is the answer to every mac users wishes. it’s a poor application witch uses a ripped version of the teamspeak protocol. this will never work as good as teamspeak 2 does and it’s ILLEGAL. i’ll keep waiting for teamspeak 3. it’s coming in a few months.
October 13th, 2005 at 21:00
Oooo so happy
I was the only Mac player in my team and i can’t bear IRC i only speek alone and, here you appear thanks
if it works i will kiss you my mac friend

October 13th, 2005 at 21:10
I’d like to try out the beta version.
October 13th, 2005 at 21:26
Since I´vent found another way to beg for a seat in the Teamspeex beta team, I´ll second Moondrake´s request … Iam also part of TeamG5, which is one of the largest Macintosh Gaming connunitys on this planet.
Beside of playing UT2k4 and WoW, I also write articles for a german Macintosh magazine. Maybe I can feature Teamspeex in one of the next issues. Please drop me a line for details.
All the best,
Stefan
October 13th, 2005 at 22:58
About time. My squaddies that use Macs in Warbirds 2005 will be very happy. That way we can talk to each other without having to type all of the time !yay! !yay!
!yay!
October 13th, 2005 at 23:01
I am as everyone else here, would love to join the closed beta. Please email me if I can be a canidate. I run my own TS server at a datacenter, yet I can’t use the stupid thing.
October 13th, 2005 at 23:18
OH You are so getting my money if you do this!
October 13th, 2005 at 23:22

October 14th, 2005 at 00:17
I’m also really glad this is happening and would be happy and willing to beta test it as well. Thank you!:-D
October 14th, 2005 at 00:18
:-D Yippee
October 14th, 2005 at 00:20
This is awsome news. I’d be honored to beta test if you need any more, or even if you don’t!
October 14th, 2005 at 00:35
Thanks for all your kind comments
I was preparing an update to all your questions, but it got pretty long and detailed so I will make it a proper blog post later instead.
Also Paul, I dont see anything illegal about this. reverse-engineering a network protocol is perfectly legal afaik. Look at Gaim and Samba for instance.
We are all waiting for TS3 Paul, we all are.. (since 2002)
And another thing, I dont recall you were a beta tester.. :secret:
October 14th, 2005 at 00:37
So great news!! You guies have done what I was waiting for since I heard of team speak! I’d love to test team speex on my iMac G5 as I have already used team speak on my friend’s windows pc. Please please allow me to be a beta tester!:D
October 14th, 2005 at 01:26
This is great news. I’m glad someone has been able to step up to the plate and code something for us mac users.
October 14th, 2005 at 01:33
Savvy:
If you need bandwidth for the beta, let me know. I can help you out. Our clan site pushes TBs a month, with downloads for Aspyr, Ambrosia, OmniGroup, and others, and we’d be more than happy to help you.

October 14th, 2005 at 03:05
Great job! cant wait!
I play wwiionline. And MANY people have been wanting to somthing like this to come out! Need a beta tester? email me os msn me at thewolfiejr@hotmail.com
THANKS!
October 14th, 2005 at 04:42
Savvy, I’m glad to see you appreciate the support and I’m very impressed that you’re responding in turn, I look forward to reading the upcoming blogpost.
As for questions:
Is there a possibility that some people may be included in the closed beta? Many of us seem to be representing gaming communities, clans, guilds and the like; could really make use of this program immediately. =]
When can we expect an open beta? (or release?)
What sort of feedback have you received from the TS group?
October 14th, 2005 at 05:00
I’m not an official beta tester, but Kenny Moens from IVAO softdev sent me a copy, and WOW!
Am I missing something in the initial release or can we not create channels yet?
October 14th, 2005 at 06:36
hey, i just wanted to mention that im in team G5 too now, and that i’d still be delighted to be testing this, since i talk a lot with friends over skype, while they use xfire and teamspeak too..
October 14th, 2005 at 09:22
Yeah, good news!!
How can I get the beta?
October 14th, 2005 at 10:03
Savvy, Thanks!!! Brillant news!
Where can download a beta version?
October 14th, 2005 at 10:06
Now I feel bad. I’ve left messages in the last week for the TS developers about supporting the Mac platform. After all there are way more Mac gamers than Linux.
Count me in on the Beta. I’m as soon as I get paid for selling a GeForce 4 Ti card on ebay I’ll donate to the cause.
The 7 guys that are in my Guild in WOW on Malygos will really benefit from this. We have been using iChat AV in OS X 10.4 which works great but no multiplayer communications with PC users.
Anyone looking to start an alternate character in WOW pop over to Malygos and message me, Diercy. I”m second in command of the guild and we have a lot of Mac users and the guild is pretty new.
October 14th, 2005 at 10:33
Works top notch! Thanks again. Please check your mails, i mailed exciting news
Way to go!
October 14th, 2005 at 10:43
Wow, wow, wow!! Thank! Thank! Thank!….
October 14th, 2005 at 11:15
I you want that I translate to Spanish or Catalan, send me a mail.
correu@noveo.org.
Thx!
October 14th, 2005 at 11:26
ah, yeah - german translators available too, if you want :left: !yay!
October 14th, 2005 at 11:36
Wow, this is good news! I hope you can get this programe up to beta status so we all can give you more feedback.
October 14th, 2005 at 13:31
I was wondering if we will also be able to download the source to the program. If not we have basically the same problem as with TS now if you abandon the rpoject or take it into a different direction than the one favored by some of us, we are left out in the cold.
If this project is open source it will be trivial to add new codecs or new features or fork it off into a completely new direction.
Oh but enough with the complaining. Great work, you did something which we awaited for a very long time. Kudos to you
October 14th, 2005 at 13:52
Sorry my english.
Your work is fantastic.
where i can download teamspeex for beta tester?
tnx
October 14th, 2005 at 14:17

Oh yeah. I hope die next puplic beta will be come in a few weeks.
October 14th, 2005 at 17:36
Yeah if you need german or french translation don’t hesitate to tell me
October 14th, 2005 at 19:59
…a missing OSX Client for TeamSpeak was the ONLY reason for me to keep a Windows-PC in my room. I hope with this Release i can soon switch to Mac only^^
…when this is running on my machine, be sure to get a little donation
October 15th, 2005 at 02:41
Cannot wait for this to be released. I recently bought a PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5 and I simply am dying to run the best apple compatible voice software on the best machine ever
I will gladly send a nice donation once this is released and put to good use. Also, I feel you probably have your reasons for hosting outside the US but if you ever want hosting hookups, want a competitive offer, or are just looking for a friendly mirror for your downloads - be sure to drop me a line. If you are a practical man/woman - what do you have to lose?
Ciao,

I’m still confused as to what possible legal issue could be arising out of the existance of this client. I would not be handing disclosing any info about the coding of this application to the TeamSpeak group nor any rights.
The only possible issue may be a copyright infringement based on the similarity of the name. There is no mention in the TeamSpeak client documentation or on the website about using a client apart from the TeamSpeak client software with the TeamSpeak servers.
They took too long, wasted time and resources (I understand there are still 2 G5 towers sitting in the TeamSpeak ‘offices’ unused since they were given to the TeamSpeak developers over 2 years ago) and now they want a slice of the pie.
Too bad and too late TeamSpeak.

This IS indeed fantastic news! But I’m a little dismayed at the TS guys for their response to this, “Co-operate, or else!” it seems to be. I’m glad that you’ll continue to release the beta to us underlings as planned.
I totally agree with Wild Palm’s sentiment above; too little too late from TS. They cannot now expect a piece of the action when they couldn’t be arsed to develop it.
This is one man, ladies and gents….ONE man, and he’s boldly gone where TeamSpeak dare not tread!

Thankyou, makes for an easier time in game. just one thing, it doesn’t work Mac to Mac. Sorry to be a bore, but we still have to use skype if we want to talk together.
But thanks for your hard work..

Like others, I’ve waited forever for an OSX Teamspeak client. I have been using Skype, but I never liked the fact that other people’s voice conservations were being routed through my machine and hence chewing up a lot of bandwidth.
The push to talk isn’t a problem if you set Caps Lock as the hotkey. Just hit Caps Lock and talk all you want without having to hold down a key. In the future a sensitivity setting would be nice (I’m sure it’s already on the To-Do list).
Excellent work though, worked right out of the dmg for me! My guild will be very happy.
